No soy Gandhi.

- According to the Wrestling Observer Vince McMahon is upset at Alberto Del Rio, because he mentioned him during his promo on Raw. Vince felt it gave away the end result of the Kevin Nash and John Laurinaitis storyline.

Vince is known for going off on one and this will likely blow over, if it hasn’t already.

- As part of his WWE sponsored rehab Matt Hardy is encouraged not to use communication devices unless speaking with family. That means no Internet and no Twitter. He made his final Tweets yesterday evening, writing:
“When you accept & realize that you’re only human & mortal, flawed & imperfect.. Only then can u repair & rebuild your fractured self into something new, pure, & strong. I truly understand that now.”

“Keep an eye on youtube.com/MATTHARDYBRAND as Ms Reby Sky Hardy ;-) is gonna keep it updated with some really cool stuff.”

There is said to be some surprise in the industry regarding Hardy’s downward spiral. Although he was never “straight edge”, he usually kept himself under control. It may be that his departure from WWE left him with more free time, giving rise to more abuse.

- The mocking of Triple H’s UFC comments keep flying in. At the UFC 135 press conference, the company’s head Dana White said: “Vince McMahon is finally letting Triple H talk, and Triple H will learn soon not to say stupid things.”

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones also called Hunter’s comments, “ridiculous.”

- Ric flair’s injury that he sustained during his match with Sting is worse than first thought. As well as a broken bursa sac in his left elbow, he also has a torn tricep muscle.

He is scheduled for surgery next week, and will need several months to rehab.

Morpheus is in the midst of his 30-Day Challenge and the other day he mentioned that he thinks that the Undertaker’s entrance is the best in wrestling. At Wrestlemania XXIV, I happened to be there live to see his entrance. It was a chilly evening that night in March. Taker’s entrance alone warmed up the entire open air stadium. My dad was with me that night and he remembers that entrance as the most memorable thing from the experience of going to the Show of Shows. So, combine that with the recent posts on the main page about Taker making his return as soon as October and it’s got me thinking ahead to next year’s Wrestlemania, where the Deadman will (in my opinion) be making his final appearance. At this time a couple of years ago, I wrote a very flattering piece about Shawn Michaels – who you probably know by now has no bigger fan than yours truly – but suggested that he needed to retire at Wrestlemania XXVI. There was no need for the WWE’s version of Michael Jordan to actually channel his inner “Airness” and stick around longer than necessary. Retire as the best and move on with your life before you ruin your body was what I figured would be best. HBK agreed. Well, Deadman, it’s your turn…

I’ve already written a flattering piece complimenting the Taker. I did it earlier this year and it was the nicest stuff I’ll ever write about the Last Outlaw. To quickly re-iterate, I look at the last five years of what he’s done at Wrestlemania – an unprecedented streak of 4 star or better matches that not even Shawn Michaels ever accomplished – and I see a wrestler that has earned my respect forever and always. He already had it as a character, but to earn it as a wrestler ranks much higher in my book. It’s the wrestling equivalent of winning the Super Bowl. Just as Peyton Manning validated his Hall of Fame career by winning a Super Bowl and making it to one other, Taker put the stamp on his resume by having five consecutive matches on the grandest stage that all currently rank in my top 25 matches in Mania history. I’m a history buff, especially of the Mania era, and I’m also a match rating guru who studies and breaks down film like few others just because I find star ratings and such fascinating. To claim five of the top 25 matches in Mania history in a span of five years is just downright incredible. Don’t bother arguing with me on this. It’s a dead end. Make like Jake Roberts and “Trust me.”

Outside of Mania, I don’t really care about Taker anymore. He’s too old and broken down to be consistent, but I do think he should go on a little bit of a farewell tour. He should wrestle at Survivor Series and get the rematch with Triple H out of the way at Madison Square Garden. What WWE wrestler wouldn’t want to get one last chance to wrestle there before they retired? Flair got the chance to do that with the Royal Rumble in 2008 and Taker now has that chance, too. He should get to take advantage of that and have one more showdown at the place where he had one of his greatest WWE title matches (against Austin in 1998) and made his return as the Deadman (in 2004). Personally, I would love to see Taker vs. Triple H again, but I don’t really want to see that at Wrestlemania again. Despite the WWE’s attempts to cover it up, I remember that Triple H has already lost twice to Taker at Mania. I don’t need to see that a third time anymore than you do. But at MSG at the PPV that he debuted at 21 years ago? That’s a moment.

So, let’s say that he does wrestle at Survivor Series. Given his physical limitations, wouldn’t it be nice if his Wrestlemania 28 feud was set-up that night? That’s an easy way to get over whoever he’s going to face and launch that individual into the spotlight reserved for those guys that take out the Taker. If handled right, Taker can hold off on returning again until Elimination Chamber. Who’s it gonna be, though, ladies and gentlemen? I’ll tell you…my suggestions aren’t going to be based on stupid questions like “Who would the fans legitimately buy as a threat to Taker’s Streak?” Let’s be honest…nobody is a threat to the Streak and no one has been since Batista and Edge in back-to-back years where they could have really used the wins. That doesn’t matter nearly as much as whiny people with nothing better to do than criticize would have you think. It’s simply about presenting a compelling story and allowing that wrestler to step into the ring with Taker and make you believe he’s got a shot during the course of the match – just like what has happened in six of Taker’s last seven Mania matches.

In my heart of hearts, Chris Jericho would be the ideal final opponent for the Deadman. That’s a dream feud for me, but I’m resigned to the fact that the opportunity came and went for it to happen. In the event that it does happen, I may just have to toss my plans of speaking at the largest health and wellness show in my area that weekend and find my way down to Miami. I am going to assume, however, that such a storyline is just a pipe dream. Thus, you can separate the potential “Streak breakers” into two categories: the old guys and the new guys. Of the old guys other than Triple H, Kane has to shoot to the top of the list since he’s got the long-established feud. They’ve feuded approximately 8,000 times according to Wikipedia, so why not one more time? I certainly don’t favor this option, having seen all eight thousand matches of theirs. Big Show is due a major match at Mania after two nothing bouts in consecutive years and he’s always the type of guy that has instant credibility. Combined with his natural chemistry with Taker as shown during their feuds in 2003 and 2008, it wouldn’t surprise me to see that one restarted, but again it’s not one that I favor. In fact, it doesn’t matter if it’s Kane, Show, Mark Henry, Triple H, Kamala, King Kong Bundy, fake Undertaker, or Randy Orton, I really don’t care to see any star that’s been a major player for over 5 years in that spot against the Taker.

I want to see someone from the new guy group. The candidates are limited because it has to be someone with the patented resume of someone with serious skill and a seriously big push. That rules out the majority of the newer talents. Two months ago, I would have said the guy at the top of that list could’ve been CM Punk. Despite having lost at two straight Wrestlemanias, Punk is the kind of guy that can talk his way into anything. Given what he’s said and done since the end of June, it would seemingly only strengthen his position to potentially face Taker. Just imagine the promos that Punk could cut against the Deadman given what happened two years ago. Unfortunately, I think Punk is wrestling himself into a spot where they’ll want to protect him. It’s crazy to think, but Punk has gone from upper mid-card to main-event guy worthy of protecting from loss in six weeks. Punk might very well be a game-changer, so you can’t just job him out to Taker without someone with equal or better potential to step into his new spot. I think Punk will, thus, end up elsewhere on the card either in a high profile match against an all-time great (other than Taker) or in the WWE Championship match at the babyface.

The second candidate amongst the newbies would be Sheamus. They have some serious work to do, but we’re not all that far removed from Sheamus being WWE Champion for 5 of the 12 months of 2010 and being rumored to wrestle Taker in a title unification match (however off base the rumor may have been). There’s not a better big man in the WWE right now than the Celtic Warrior and he’s already got the pedigree with the two WWE title reigns. All he needs now is the consistent push as a top guy for the next several months. Unfortunately for my new favorite wrestler, I just don’t see him getting that sustained push. The fact that he was left off the Mania card this year doesn’t help. So, I think the top two newbie candidates are going to be the two new guys that were in the co-main-events at Wrestlemania 27. The Miz won the main-event at Wrestlemania. Unique viewers that don’t consistently watch the product outside Mania are going to remember Miz pinning Cena when April 1st rolls around. Assuming that he goes on to have a strong remainder of 2011, Miz could quite easily step into the role and use his voice to make the match with Taker special. It would not hurt him to lose like it would for Punk, despite Miz being fairly secure in his top spot in the company. I think he’ll be just as likely to be back in the WWE title picture, but he’s got the history (with wins over both of the current golden boys in Orton and Cena in big match situations) to go in as a threat against Taker and be looked at much like Orton was several years ago as a guy who the WWE sees as the present and future (perhaps to the point that he’d be given an outside shot at actually ending the streak, however unlikely).

If I had my druthers, though, I would choose the guy that lost the World title match at Mania 27: Alberto Del Rio. I may be bucking conventional feelings about the Mexican Aristocrat, but I’m quite confident that Del Rio will succeed when he is given the ball just as he has succeeded when given the opportunity to shine to this point. Put him against Mysterio and Edge, two top WWE stars for years, and he did nothing but impress. Given the chance as champion, I’m sure he’ll do the same. I like the potential of his rich character playing the “destiny” card against Taker’s Streak. I envision a scenario where he costs the Deadman some sort of major match at some point, igniting the feud. Perhaps Taker costs Del Rio the championship at Elimination Chamber and they take it from there. The money will already roll in thanks to Cena vs. Rock, but the Mexican market is the second biggest they’ve got and it would stand to reason that it would boom in that market if Del Rio was in such a high profile match. In interviews, Del Rio has stated that his dream match would be against Taker at Mania, so he’d be motivated to do the best work of his career and increase his chance of success. The most exciting scenario that I can come up with is, as sort of a tribute to Taker’s Mania opponents, have Alberto spend the weeks leading to Mania bringing in the likes of Jake Roberts, King Kong Bundy, Diesel, and Sid to study where they went wrong and then punctuating his research by talking with Kane, Triple H, HBK, Henry, Orton, Edge etc. to make sure he’s fully prepared and to ensure that the audience sees him as the most legitimate threat possible. Then, there’s potential for his entrance in Miami. With an open roof stadium and the WWE’s willingness in the past to spend obscene money to make that scenario truly special, I dream of a Bell Helicopter FLYING Del Rio to the ringside area.

Any way you cut it, I think there are a few unadulterated facts about this upcoming Wrestlemania, if everyone currently healthy stays that way. The first is that Cena vs. Rock will main-event. The second is that Punk and Orton will occupy top level matches. The third is that Taker will go 20-0 against someone. I would prefer to see Taker win that final bout against a fresh face.

Summerslam is upon us and most people are likely to hinge their purchasing decision on John Cena vs. CM Punk in the Unification match. Last Monday, Punk delivered another riveting promo that was laced with the kind of information that you usually read about on the dirt sheets. Cena countered with his own brand of backstage info. It was kind of refreshing to see guys mention work rate and heel personas and defending the roster cuts and bringing up personal stories from the days of WWECW. It’s a theme, reality is, that the WWE has vaguely ventured into using in the past, but has never fully embraced. Punk seems to be the embodiment of a willingness to give that direction for their product a real try. Will it continue? I really don’t know, but I’m certainly going to enjoy it while it lasts and touch on it a great deal today while it’s a hot topic.

Edge vs. Matt Hardy back in ’05 was sort of a preview. I remember getting a small taste of what it might be like if the WWE really geared their entire product toward more realistic situations that were founded in some degree of truth. That type of stuff can be used to ignite entertaining television not just at the bottom of the second hour of Raw, but throughout the shows. Edge had always been missing something as a character until he had an affair with Lita and Hardy blabbered about it all over the internet. Finally, Edge turned a corner because he was stuck defending himself about a situation that – based on usual wrestling etiquette – had no business being aired out in public. It was REAL. And it WORKED. The rest is history.

In an age where just about everything is accessible to the media, I think taking a full turn onto Reality Street would do the WWE a lot of good. It starts with a guy like CM Punk who has enough pent up aggression and enough of a fan base to unleash many a personal tirade laced with backstage rumors – the kind of stuff that the part of the audience that I and most of the folks reading this represent will eat up. He’s the leader of the movement, but he’s just the beginning. He’s the first to really base a character around it, but he’s not the only one with a lot on his or her mind. Look at Beth Phoenix and Nattie Neidhart – they’ve given another little preview of what could happen if people were allowed to (controllably) get off their chest what has been building up inside them for months and years. Beth and Nattie, too, are voices of the voiceless. They are wrestlers; not models pretending to be wrestlers. It has to frustrate them that they’re ready and able to produce, but the WWE insists on bringing in stick figures and waiting for them to learn what Nattie and Beth already know how to do. Could we see this trend of “speaking your mind” trickle down into each division? This is the type of material that makes rivalries more engaging.

The “reality” trend on TV is not the furthest they can take this, though. Sure, I’m all for seeing the Reality era of the WWE on television and PPV, but isn’t it time that the WWE embraced all aspects of the fan experience? For all that they do well, they have long since missed the boat on one aspect of fandom that other sports and entertainment outlets knock out of the park: the media. ESPN is nothing more than a bunch of sports fanatics that got together and made a television network dedicated to nothing but talking about and broadcasting what they love. Long before that, the powers that be within the major sports entities for basketball, American football, soccer, tennis, golf, etc. knew that the media members had to be let in to do interviews and things of that sort so that they could gain greater exposure and, thus, have better ratings and make more money across the board. Now, in today’s society, it has reached the point where there are TV networks dedicated not just to certain leagues (the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, etc.) but even college conferences and ONE college team (Univ. of Texas). The bottom line has expanded infinitely with social media and the amount of coverage for sports and entertainment (like Hollywood actors and actresses) and has grown to unprecedented heights. It creates jobs and diehard fans and the leagues embrace most of it because it drives interest in their product.

Then, there’s the WWE. The image of the diehard wrestling fan is that of the “booger eater” who sits in his mom’s basement fantasizing about the divas and criticizing John Cena on his wrestling skills despite never having been in the wrestling ring. Who created that image? The WWE did, at least in part. Instead of embracing the most passionate part of their fan base, they mocked it into the ground. Despite the fact that they have quite a large wrestling media that writes and blogs about it every day just like sports beat writers do – only for no money in most cases – the WWE has not seemed to want much to do with that part of the audience. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen an NFL owner mock ESPN for being a “dirt sheet.” They may get irritated about certain things they don’t want being public, but who the hell really cares when you’re making millions and billions of dollars every year in large part thanks to that same media that ensures that people pay attention to your product? Increased coverage thanks to diehard sports fans has driven sports like international soccer, NFL football, and NBA basketball to becoming more successful enterprises. Why does the WWE not seem to understand that they could have their product get a huge boost in exposure by dropping this illusionary veil that they try to pull over everyone’s eyes? Vince comes from an era where kayfabe – not letting on that wrestling was pre-determined sport heavy on the athletic entertainment in a similar light as figure skating or dancing - was king and he did a little bit of work toward tearing that down. However, his company is the only major sports and entertainment conglomerate that still doesn’t embrace its media.

The next step toward a reality era is to tear down the wall that separates the WWE from being able to be legitimately covered by its fan base. I don’t see any reason why the Wrestling Press should not attempt to gain more traction moving forward. It may seem silly, but something like the Teacher’s Lounge (under a different name) ought to be legitimately featured on a radio station dedicated to sports entertainment/pro-wrestling. LOP Magazine should be real. LOP and other top wrestling-related sites should not be looked at as “dirt sheets,” but legitimate print media outlets (i.e. in a more positive light). It couldn’t hurt to think bigger. LOP is anywhere from the 2nd to 5th ranked wrestling website on the World Wide Web. Viewers per day have frequently crept into the millions. We’re talking a lot of people. And it’s not as if we’re the booger eaters that we’re made out to be. There are two legitimate doctoral degrees on the column writing staff alone…and it’s just a hobby! As Hustle mentioned not too long ago in one of his columns, the wrestling fan and the members of the “media” that cover it should not have to feel bad about it. Young writers should be able to cut their teeth in forums like ours and others and then go on to journalism school with the goal to cover the WWE like Adam Schefter went to journalism school and is now one of the top 40 most influential non-NFL player/coach/owners in the National Football League. That shouldn’t be a pipe dream.

It won’t happen, though, unless the WWE stops being blind to the amount of extra exposure that they could gain from it. What is LOP, but a sports entertainment version of ESPN without the backing of the very “leagues” that it covers? Imagine the drop off in interest should the NFL pull the plug on ESPN or Yahoo Sports, disassociating with them and giving its writers and staff and fans that frequent those sites a bad name. Would that help the NFL? Absolutely not! It would do nothing but eliminate one of the very things that drive its popularity.

In the spirit of what we discussed today, I will be working on a joint venture with multiple other writers to bring you a legitimate piece of Wrestling Media material on a bi-weekly to monthly basis. It will be a top 10-25 that you, the wrestling media, can vote on. College football here in the States has an Associated Press that determines a top 25 ultimately used to help crown the two teams that play for the national championship. You will be part of the WWE Press and have the option to vote. We’ll send it directly to the WWE for the hell of it. The reality era is upon us...we may as well embrace it.

Summerslam Champions League Final

Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels in a Non-Sanctioned Street Fight at Summerslam 2002

“The two best ever in quite possibly the best match ever. Simply the best.” – Matt W.

“That match is the only match in the history of wrestling that I cried over.” – Andre S.

VS.

Bret Hart vs. The British Bulldog for the Intercontinental Championship at Summerslam 1992

“Not only was it the only time the IC Championship main evented a PPV and is considered to be the greatest IC Championship match of all-time by a lot of people it also showed that Bret Hart had what it took to draw, carry a match and could be trusted to carry the company. It was a very important match on a lot of fronts.” – Lunchbox

“Great technical show, great finish, great crowd/ unique Venue, magnitude of IC being the Main Event, launch of Bret into Main Event, no gimmick needed” – Westuva07

Well, I suppose it was fitting that the two matches that I selected last year as the first and second best bouts in Summerslam history would end up facing each other in the final. I think that pretty much goes to show that the consensus considers these two matches the cream of the crop from the summer classic. Personally, I did not vote in this round and relegated myself to being the tiebreaker. Last year, though, I stated that although Bret Hart was Mr. Summerslam (and you backed that up with your votes of so many of his matches), the best match in Summerslam history belonged to Shawn Michaels and Triple H. I will say, though, that there was never a more brilliant performance at a Summerslam than Bret’s in 1992. Davey Boy Smith was not a good worker back then. Bret, for nearly 30-minutes, basically told the Bulldog where to go and what to do and when to do it. The fact that this match was so good and is still so well-received today is a huge testament to the Hitman’s skills. However, when you look at HBK vs. HHH, you’re dealing with a special performance that really could not have been any better – in my opinion. HBK’s return from injury brought about a lot of emotion from yours truly, mainly that of concern for his well-being while he was attempting some of the moves that he pulled off so gracefully. I think it’s a 5-star performance, which of course is a rarity.

The results are in…

With 59% of the votes, the winner of the Summerslam Champions League to determine the greatest match in Summerslam history is….

HBK vs. Triple H
