JAY's WAYS - by Justin Watry

Hello, welcome to the debut of edition of Jay's ways! I am super excited to be writing for this great site and would like to introduce myself. My name is Justin Watry, and I am a wrestling fan. Have been my entire life. As cliche as it sounds, I grew up watching the shows and have never looked back. One day, while I was on Facebook, I suggested to Ryan that his sites feature columnists - he asked for a sample, and the rest is history. Since this business is always about evolving and innovation, I knew I had the perfect style to catch on with readers…..

The premise of the column is quite simple. yet very fun. The first half will be spent on whatever topic is in the news or on my mind at the time. Seems easy enough? Well, the second half of the column is where my idea comes into play, and is extremely dependent on "reader interaction". Let me put it to you like this, have you ever wanted to write for a wrestling website? Have you ever thought that you knew more that the writer that you spend your time reading? Have you ever thought that you were smarter than all the commenting trolls?

Here is the deal: the second part of each column will be "Jay's ways". I will write down my top 5 predictions for the next 7 days (until my next column). Then in the comment section below or an email to my address listed, YOU will write down your top 5 predictions for the next 7 days in the world of professional wrestling. It can be anything from "John Cena wants to turn heel" to "TNA's rating will be a 1.1?." Remember it must occur in the next 7 days only(and_please_be_humble_enough_NOT_to_post_SD!_or_TNA_spoillers_as_guesses), as the following column will feature a brand new top 5 at the end of 4 weeks (columns), I will tally to see who won. A perfect score 20 being, of course! If I win the 4 week totally, I will continue to write each column. If anyone beats me, the high scorer will get the first half column of the following. The winner can write about whatever they wish in the space allowed, and I will eat crow. Every 4 weeks brings a new adventure, so let's get started shall we?

In ring ability vs. mic skills - the age old debate. Which one is more important? It is a very unique argument when you really think about it. In any other line of work, it is very easy to decide. However, in the crazy world of wrazzlin, it blurs the line a little bit. In a fixed sport, there are so many factors that come into play, like politics, fan interaction, size, strength, charisma, training, luck, skill, etc., etc.

However, what we are talking about today is-in ring or talking. Is one more important that the other? Some way that the only way to dictate the future is to look at the past. Well, let's try that for a second. We are not going to go too far back, so the logical point to start is the 80's with Hulk Hogan. Now it is no secret that the man is not a very good in - ring technician. He is an amazing, amazing, amazing sports entertainer, but when it came to armbars and suplexes and running the ropes, I will take a pass on him. Clearly, he favors the mic skill/talker side of this debate. Clearly.

When talking about the 80's, most people name Hogan (maybe André) will as being "the man", but "the man" will always be Ric Flair. With him, it's a tricky situation, as he was so good at just about everything he has ever done. If we had to pick one side or the other, would we pick in - ring or charisma? Honestly, it is a toss up, but for me, it is in - ring abilities. I can hear the flaming already, but hear me out. When you think of flair, what comes to mind first? His catchphrases? Ok. His clothes? Ok. His injuries? Ok. The main thing though? His classic matches (bloody ones at that).

Leading into the 90's, the new generation what all about in - ring. No. doubt there. As great as Bret Hart is, he was never the best mic you. Sorry. Same rude, Steamboat, Owen with perfect, etc., etc. The late 90's, on the other hand, what all about 'sports entertainment'. As much as people cry these days about 'wrestling time' during shows; I dare those same people to watch their beloved attitude era with a stop watch cell phone. It won't be pretty. With the wrestling we actually got a decade ago, it what is usually pretty good. However, if you have to pick just one or ther other, again the choice is clear... Mic skills and talking dominated the late 90's, as another boom period for wrestling exploded.

The 2000's, to me, has been hit or miss. Great in - ring action mixed in with great talkers has been featured prominently during the past few years. If I had to pick the past 10 years over, it would have to be mic skills barely beat out the wrestling action. In the past couple of years, for all the nonsense backstage skits and long promos that happened, you can name just as many classic or great matches than any other decade in this business.

In conclusion, what has been more important? It variés. Eddie Guerrero had a little of both. Hogan was all on one side. Bret Hart was all on one side. Cena (much to the dismay of the haters) has a little of both. His matches have almost always delivered on PPV, and he has the best facial reactions going today. With a gun to my head though, having to decide one way or the other, I'd have to pick against wrestling action. I'm not here to tick people off, but this business has always been more about selling merch, DVDs, T-shirts, tickets, glow sticks, foam finger, PPV's whatever. To me, the best way to do that what always on the mic, not not wrestling in the ring. The great matches are the dessert to the product, not the meat and potatoes.

THIS WEEK'S TOP 5 JAY'S WAYS

1. TNA wants to make another release/cut. Good!
2. TNA talent will sign another. It's what they do…
3. CM Punk will tweet something controversial. Duh!
4. TNA will get a 1.2 television rating. Yay!
5. Justin Gabriel wants to win at a house show…hopefully.

Alright guys (and gals), it is now your turn. What is YOUR top 5 for the next 7 days? Remember-the winner gets to write a piece of this column, after adding up the 4 week total. Please no SD!, TNA, or any other spoilers that have already happened. Those will not be allowed, obviously. Rumored spoilers are more than welcome, as evidence by my picks this week. You can either leave your bold predictions in the comment section below or email me @ jw_bball_615@hotmail.com - thanks and have fun!
