Former Creative Member Speaks, Triple H Talks Katie Vick Angle, WWE Studios Struggling

- Source: The LAW
Former WWE creative team member Brian Mann was a recent guest with John Pollock and Wai Ting on The LAW chatting about his time with the team from this past summer through his exit in October. Here are the highlights, transcribed by Chris Maffei:
The chain of command on the team: “At the end of the day, the show has one writer, and that’s Vince. So, you can have a team of 12-15 people, and they’re being delegated certain responsibilities at certain times, but ultimately what ends up on TV is, of all the ideas and everything that Vince hears, what he decides to go with. Ultimately, when it goes to Vince, there’s no writer credit, nothing like that. As far as the hierarchy, it sort of gets thrown out the window. People have various responsibilities, but it’s nothing that interesting to really talk about. As far as the creative aspects, at the end of the day, the show has one writer. A lot of the preconceived notions that I had going into it, as far as various egos and why certain things are done, I was wrong about a lot of it. Just coming out of the experience, I certainly view the product much differently, and I would certainly say that I left the process having a whole lot more respect for everybody involved.
“I’d say one of the biggest misconceptions that goes out there, and this is something I felt sometimes the Internet communities are a little too harsh on the creative team…being able to look at it from the scripting phase and the brainstorming phase, and finally what ends up on television, the things that are on TV that maybe sometimes don’t necessarily come across as the best written are rarely due to poor writing. A lot of times I’d say it can be poor execution, sometimes it can be just be simply poor response. Other times, you have a really great, solid idea, and when you just get so many opinions and ideas being thrown it, it waters it down. This is something I was told in the very beginning – for every idea that comes up, there’s a fantastic reason to do it, and a fantastic reason not to do it.”
The CM Punk angle coming out of ‘Money in the Bank’: “I certainly heard tons of stories afterwards, because everyone who was on the writing team was obviously there during that. I started two weeks afterwards. I’ll certainly say that everyone involved in that angle was extremely proud of it. Everyone on the team just could not say enough, as far as just saying how electric it felt to be in the room. As far as being in Chicago, just how it really felt that you were a part of something huge. They were all so incredibly excited for it.
“I don’t know who it was on the writing team, but a couple people were feeling a little down, as great as it was, because it was like, ‘Oh great, how are we gonna mess this up?’ Knowing that, whenever something huge like this happens, it’s the follow-up. Again, I think a large part of that is not necessarily the writing team, it’s the way the show is produced that makes it so hard to get an idea and stick with it.
“I remember one of the big stories that was all over the Internet that (Dave) Meltzer was pushing a lot was the story about when Punk came back, there was this whole thing where Hunter was supposed to Pedigree him, that was one of the story ideas. Now, without going into that full story idea, because I later heard what the full idea was, this is just kinda the thing of half-judging something knowing only a portion of the story that leaks on the Internet. That other storyline, that would have culminated with Triple H Pedigreeing him that evening, I think would have been much better for his character. Knowing the full context surrounding it, I think it would have been much, much better.”
- Triple H discussed the infamous Katie Vick storyline during an interview this morning with 790theticket.com – he said that he had to stop at one point and ask “What are we doing?” But they went ahead regardless.
He also noted that at this point in his career, he sometimes just wants to entertain himself. “There have been times where I’ll say something get crickets from the crowd but I got Shawn to crack so it was worth it.”
- Entertainment Journal Variety has an article looking at WWE’s struggling Movie division. They wrote:
WWE received a reminder during the third quarter of why it needs to pin down plans to make its film division profitable.
The studio division alone saw revenue plummet 51% to $3.7 million due to poor B.O. and homevideo sales.
The company’s WWE Studios division took a $5.1 million writedown from three films, “Knucklehead,” “The Chaperone” and “Inside Out,” during the period that ended Sept. 30, dragging down overall results for WWE, which saw revenue fall 9.5% to $108 million and profits drop 26.1% to $10.6 million.
As a result, WWE’s chairman and CEO Vince McMahon said the company was going to “monitor and refine to improve future performance” of the film business.
WWE already has started overhauling its film biz, tapping Michael Luisi in September to oversee WWE Studios. Under Luisi, WWE will focus more on partnering with outside producers and picking up projects at film festivals. It acquired post-apocalyptic thriller “The Day,” at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. and paired with Pathe UK to make the thriller “No One Lives.”
The studio division still has three films to release as part of its old model over the next six months.
Films will play a key part of the programming WWE plans to air on a new cable channel it will launch sometime next year. Network will be owned by WWE. It has yet to reveal who will carry the channel, however.

Triple H Vote of No Confidence

On Monday Night Raw, we saw the WWE Superstars and Staff members giving WWE COO Triple H Vote of No Confidence. In a dramatic ending, the entire WWE Raw and Smackdown Superstars and Divas along with announcers, camera crews and referees left the ring with Triple H standing alone.
While HHH was able to reject the appeals from Wade Barrett, Mike Chloda, Beth Phoenix, Jerry Lawler put the icing on the cake with a straightforward deduction.

The WWE Hall of Famer point out that somebody wanted Triple H out of the WWE COO position and because of that, the company had become an unsafe environment for the WWE staff and talents. In any case, if HHH resigns as WWE COO, then the attack and chaos in the WWE would stop.
It is noteworthy that the likes of John Cena, CM Punk and Randy Orton were not at ringside during the Triple H Vote of No Confidence segment.
It would seem that with no support from the talents and staff members, Triple H is no longer WWE COO. We will have more on this breaking story as it develops right here on Tribalwrestling.com.
Beside the Triple H Vote of No Confidence announcement, here are some other WWE news.

Backstage News from This Week's RAW, WWE Not Wanting Fans to Boo Triple H
AppId is over the quota
- As noted before, Vince McMahon was in a very bad mood at RAW two weeks ago in Cleveland, Ohio. Some speculated that what set Vince off was when Alberto Del Rio name-dropped him in a promo. Sources say that while Vince was absolutely mad at Del Rio for the promo, he was mad at everyone in general and didn't treat Del Rio any worse than other people.
The promo that mentioned Vince by name actually was approved by McMahon himself and others in charge. Vince didn't want his name mentioned on TV until he returns as the idea is for people to think he's gone for good, so when he does re-appear it will be a surprise. Vince felt that Del Rio ruined that.
Vince's name was originally put in the promo to establish Triple H as not being an emissary of Vince's and to get him over as a babyface. There was a fear that because Punk is so over with the fans, people were booing Triple H and officials didn't want that.
WWE producer Kevin Dunn was also in a bad mood but it's said when Vince is that upset and takes it out on Dunn, he gets in that mood also.
Things were reportedly way better at this week's RAW. Word is that Vince and Dunn both thought Michael Cole's line about Jerry Lawler having anal bleeding was one of his funniest lines. They were even happier when the term "anal bleeding" was trending on Twitter.

WWE issued a video to mailing list subscribers of Shawn Michaels interrupting Triple H's promotion of the Inside Out DVD. After teasing the movie's plot of Triple's character killing his best friend, Michaels questions the Chief Operating Officer's decision making in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
He tells Triple H, "I just want you to know there's no hard feelings 'cause of what you did to my friend, Kevin Nash. You fired him like a no-good S.O.B. and I'm sure you had a perfectly good reason even though it looks like you've changed an awful lot and you're not the same guy you used to be.
"I'm not going to hold that against you. What anyone says that you're a turncoat, backstabber—I don't believe them."
Michaels then tells Hunter that he may be seeing him again soon, and leaves the room.

Backstage Heat On Del Rio, Hardy’s Final Tweets, UFC Head Mocks Triple H, Flair’s Injury
AppId is over the quota
- According to the Wrestling Observer Vince McMahon is upset at Alberto Del Rio, because he mentioned him during his promo on Raw. Vince felt it gave away the end result of the Kevin Nash and John Laurinaitis storyline.
Vince is known for going off on one and this will likely blow over, if it hasn’t already.
- As part of his WWE sponsored rehab Matt Hardy is encouraged not to use communication devices unless speaking with family. That means no Internet and no Twitter. He made his final Tweets yesterday evening, writing:
“When you accept & realize that you’re only human & mortal, flawed & imperfect.. Only then can u repair & rebuild your fractured self into something new, pure, & strong. I truly understand that now.”
“Keep an eye on youtube.com/MATTHARDYBRAND as Ms Reby Sky Hardy is gonna keep it updated with some really cool stuff.”
There is said to be some surprise in the industry regarding Hardy’s downward spiral. Although he was never “straight edge”, he usually kept himself under control. It may be that his departure from WWE left him with more free time, giving rise to more abuse.
- The mocking of Triple H’s UFC comments keep flying in. At the UFC 135 press conference, the company’s head Dana White said: “Vince McMahon is finally letting Triple H talk, and Triple H will learn soon not to say stupid things.”
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones also called Hunter’s comments, “ridiculous.”
- Ric flair’s injury that he sustained during his match with Sting is worse than first thought. As well as a broken bursa sac in his left elbow, he also has a torn tricep muscle.
He is scheduled for surgery next week, and will need several months to rehab.

I don’t see us needing to evolve to what UFC does because quite frankly sometimes the fights are long and boring, guys lying around and sometimes the fights are fast and over in five seconds. I’ve always thought one of the things about us, if you look at us solely from a sports standpoint, is that we always give you a good show. We’re never going to give you a crap game.
I think if anybody needs to evolve, it’s them. Give more of an entertainment standpoint. Give more form; they just have fighters who walk in in T-shirts and shorts and just stand there and then they fight and then they win and then they go “thanks, I’d like to thank my sponsors” and then they leave. The whole world was up in arms when Brock was flipping people off and was cussing at the beer company because they didn’t give him any money and everyone thought, “oh my god, he’s disrespectful,” — the whole world was talking about it. Triple H Says MMA Needs to Evolve, CM Punk Responds, More

- MMAFighting.com has excerpted part of Triple H's interview he did with Moviefone.com last week. It should be noted this question wasn't in the original interview we wrote about. Here's Triple H's response when asked about UFC:
Moviefone: How do you think WWE and pro wrestling needs to evolve as UFC and MMA grows in popularity?
"I don't think we have to evolve. It's two totally different things. I think now especially there's this thing like, "oh it's very similar."

CM Punk responded on Twitter this afternoon to Triple H's MMA comments: "RIDICULOUS!!!!! Laugh out loud ignorance."
Triple H was also asked about the recent article exposing Ric Flair's troubles. He said:
